Sarah Michelle Gellar finally makes a return to television later this year in a new drama show called Ringer. And almost as if to make up for the long wait, plays two characters rather than just one. Gellar, in her first tv role since Buffy The Vampire Slayer finished in 2003, will play identical twin sisters Bridget and Siobhan. Twin sisters who have lived very different lives from each other. After a successful pilot episode, Ringer has been picked up for a full series by US network The CW. It will air later this year, after that it will hopefully reach these shores.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this, as I have long thought that she is a very fine and accomplished actress. In Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer she provided the star qualities and status to carry a long running series. But she also displayed a genuine depth and quality to her acting throughout it’s seven seasons. In addition she also showed she was a natural at playing comedy. She has spent the last couple of years raising her new baby Charlotte with husband Freddie Prinze Jr., whom she married back in 2002. And the easier schedule involved in making a tv series (rather than movies) has been cited as one of the reasons she decided on this return.

Dual Roles

So what is Ringer all about? As you can see from the YouTube trailer above, the title refers to ‘Dead Ringers’ and the dual roles. Bridget has had a tough life and had to battle many demons and addictions. Her estranged sister Siobhan seems to have it all. After meeting up again for the first time in six years, Siobhan goes missing on a boat trip and Bridget belives her to have drowned. Seeing an unusual and rare opportunity in front of her Bridget decides to assume her sister’s identity. But the path she has chosen turns out to be more dangerous than she could have imagined. What secrets had her sister been hiding, and just what danger has Bridget put herself in? Ringer looks like a very promising show, look out for it later this year.
