Kids In The Hall Death Comes To Town

Death Comes To The Hall

Canadian comedy quintet The Kids In The Hall have reunited to film a new eight part tv series. Death Comes To Town is due to air in Canada in January. The Kids In The Hall was a sketch show that ran from 1988 to 1994 on CBC in Canada. It built up a cult following around the globe with it’s surreal sketches and characters like Mr.Tyzik. The person who pretended to crush people’s heads from a distance.

Consisting of Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson, the team also released one movie. Brain Candy, who’s plot about a powerful antidepressant became an overnight sensation in 1996. It was accompanied by an excellent soundtrack featuring Pavement, They Might Be Giants, Guided By Voices, Yo La Tengo and Stereolab. The film saw limited success as it divided critics and courted much controversy. However after this they took a break from working together for four years, but have toured live together since then.

Death Comes To Town is set in the small town of Shuckton, and centres around a killing spree that ensues after the character of Death steps off of a Greyhound bus there. The story continues in the form of a ‘whodunnit’ as a trial follows, and everyone in town seems to fall under suspicion at some point. The trailer for it (below) shows some similarities perhaps to The League Of Gentlemen. I think that’s probably a fair pointer towards it’s feel and style to those unfamiliar with their previous work.

So, keep a look out for it in the new year, and I’ll try and update should news appear about any UK screenings. Above all, you should seek out some of their earlier work.
