Stevie Nicks & Christine McVie

Stevie Nicks vs Christine McVie – You Decide…

Between the two of them, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie seperately wrote many of Fleetwood Mac’s biggest hits. During a phenomenally successful period for the band that saw them sell millions of albums and singles worldwide. Hits such as Dreams, Don’t Stop, Little Lies, Rhiannon and You Make Lovin’ Fun showcased their talent to great degrees. But which of them was the best songwriter? As Harry Hill might say, there’s only one way to find out…

I’ve set up a poll at the end of this post where you can decide. Before that, let’s take a little look at their respective contributions…

Stevie Nicks

You have to begin by saying that Stevie Nicks wrote the only no.1 single Fleetwood Mac ever had. This was the song Dreams, from the album Rumours. Reaching the top spot stateside on June 18th 1977, it has since been covered many times, by The Corrs, Whiskeytown, Tori Amos and also Deep Dish (which Nicks herself provided vocals for). It was recently featured on US TV show Glee, too.

Her other songs for Fleetwood Mac include Rhiannon, Landslide (used recently in the South Park mid-season finale), Silver Springs, Gold Dust Woman, Sara and Seven Wonders. In recent years, a sample from her solo song Edge Of Seventeen was used prominently in Bootylicious by Destiny’s Child.

Christine McVie

The biggest hit that Christine McVie wrote for Fleetwood Mac was actually Don’t Stop. Even though Lyndsey Buckingham provides the main vocal duties on it. Don’t Stop peaked on the US Billboard charts at no.3, and has since been covered by Elton John, Status Quo, as well as appearing in the aforementioned Glee episode. It has featured twice in The Simpsons, and was chosen as the campaign song for Bill Clinton when running for President.

Her other contributions to the band include Over My Head, Say You Love Me, You Make Loving Fun. She also provided the biggest hits from 1987 comeback album Tango In The Night in the form of Little Lies and Everywhere.

Time To Decide

I hope you’ll take the time to vote for your choice below, and I welcome all your comments below. I know that Nicks and McVie weren’t Fleetwood Mac’s only songwriters. Lyndsey Buckingham contributed many songs himself across their albums, as did Peter Green, in their earlier incarnation. But it’s these two ladies who I believe made the biggest contribution at the band’s peak, and the ones I have chosen for this poll. Sorry if this choice offends any of the band’s fans.
